Race Athlete Spotlight: Jessica Divin

This year, Jessica Divin ran the Chicago and NYC Marathon as part of the Race to End Duchenne team.  Her inspiration: her son, Ben.

Meet Jessica

Why did you choose to join the Race to End Duchenne team?

I was looking for a way to do more. If I’m being honest I needed 2 things.  A concrete way to fight back at Duchenne and a way create awareness. What I didn’t expect were the benefits – the physical and mental release and finding community along the way.

How many races have you participated in?

Many! My all time favorite was Disney half marathon!

How do you prepare for races?

It really depends on the length of the race. This year I ran both the Chicago and NYC marathon so I began training 6 months ago. For me personally, support is key! All of my long weekend runs have been done with friends or a running group. I also try to maintain consistency by following a running plan, incorporating cross training and most importantly, listening to my body.

Do you have any fundraising and/or training tips or pointers you would share with other runners – either advice someone gave you or you’ve discovered on your own?

Share your story. Share your why. When you let people in, amazing things can happen. Also, as a parent, it’s easy and fun to brag on your kids! Duchenne is a difficult road-and yet many our DMD kids (siblings too) accomplish amazing things despite the countless challenges.

What will be the first thing you do when you finish your next race?

I feel the correct answer should be text my family to let them know I crossed the finish line. But honestly, I will be reaching for food and that finish line beer! And then I will text my family.
