Race Athlete Spotlight: Lauren Casey

It takes a village in a Duchenne/Becker Family.  Lauren Casey is an aunt to two boys living with Becker muscular dystrophy and has joined the Race to End Duchenne in their honor.  She took on the Smuttynose Hampton Rockfest in 2022 and will be back for 2023!

Meet Lauren

Why did you choose to join the Race to End Duchenne team?

PPMD was a Godsend for my family when we first found out the MD could affect my nephews (and as a result, all of us).  As an aunt to two boys living with BMD, I felt the least I could do was run a few miles to fundraise for such a vital organization with a dedication to ending Duchenne.  Derek (shown here with Lauren), AKA DiDi, joined me in my efforts this past year because he’s grown to love my nephews as much as I do.

How many races have you participated in?

2023 will be my fifth and Derek’s will be joining me for his second Race to End Duchenne.

How do you prepare for races?

We start training for races a few months in advance by exercising and running 1-2 miles a day, about 5 days a week.

Do you have any fundraising and/or training tips or pointers you would share with other runners – either advice someone gave you or you’ve discovered on your own?

Facebook is a really awesome social media platform to share on.  The more information you can share with your friends and family about why and who you’re fundraising for, the better!

What will be the first thing you do when you finish your next race?

We always give big hugs or blow big FaceTime kisses to our nephew after we finish our race…then we chow down on lobster rolls and clam chowder and guzzle Smuttynose beers at the Hampton Beach!

Join Lauren in the Race to End Duchenne

Race to End Duchenne is Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy’s signature program that raises funds to support our mission to end Duchenne muscular dystrophy. When you join the Race to End Duchenne you are supporting PPMD’s vital work in advancing research, care, and advocacy to help those with Duchenne live longer, stronger lives. Join the team at one of our upcoming races!
