Race Athlete Spotlight: Jake Walton

Jake Walton ran his first Race to End Duchenne in 2022 for his wife and sons.

Meet Jake

Why did you choose to join the Race to End Duchenne team?

I joined the Race to End Duchenne team to raise money for PPMD.  My two boys, Preston and Landon, are both affected by DMD, and my wife, Karly, is a manifesting carrier of the disease.  PPMD has been a tremendous resource for our family.

How many races have you participated in?

The 2022 San Diego Rock and Roll Marathon was my first Marathon race.  I have also run a couple of 10K’s.

How do you prepare for races?

I prepared for the R&R Marathon by doing an “8 Week Marathon Training Plan” that mixed in short, easy paced runs with a long run on the weekends.

Do you have any fundraising and/or training tips or pointers you would share with other runners – either advice someone gave you or you’ve discovered on your own?

The most important fundraising step, by far, is the first one – sign up for the fundraiser!  Get the word out to family and friends!

What will be the first thing you do when you finish your next race?

For my next PPMD fundraiser, I think that I will probably choose to run a Half Marathon.  The Half seems like a much more reasonable distance and would also leave me in a better position to enjoy the post-race festivities!

Join Jake in the Race to End Duchenne

Race to End Duchenne is Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy’s signature program that raises funds to support our mission to end Duchenne muscular dystrophy. When you join the Race to End Duchenne you are supporting PPMD’s vital work in advancing research, care, and advocacy to help those with Duchenne live longer, stronger lives. Join the team at one of our upcoming races!
